Today in our advance level lesson we were discussing about a Death Penalty case here in Japan.
The Supreme Court on Monday upheld the death sentence for a man who killed a young mother and her baby daughter when he was a minor, ending years of campaigning by the victim’s husband.
The high-profile case has generated a debate in Japan on how to deal with violent juvenile criminals and whether they should be named by the media. In a major departure from established rules of reporting, major media, including NHK, identified the defendant after Monday’s ruling.“Is it social justice to give a person an opportunity to return to the society when someone younger than 20 years old kills? Or is it social justice to have the person to pay for the crime with death?” he said. “I thought very hard. Perhaps, there is no right answer.”
